I take mine off when they blush so they won’t get eaten by the bugs or split from the rain. They usually ripen within a day or two.

The moment a tomato gets any red...IT WILL NOT RIPEN ANYMORE ON THE VINE, THATS A WIVES TALE! SOOO.. you are right for picking them early, but for the wrong sciantific reason. Samantics...Stay Safe.

@@waylandsmalleycomeonletsplant I'd be fine if they were just eating their fill. They do that nicely on my sweet potato vines. Which is fine because those plants are huge and hearty. Beautiful for being in North Dakota. But, they are chewing 8" to 10" lengths off my tomato plants, and eating the stems to my baby bell peppers and letting those lengths and the baby peppers fall. Not even eating them. 👹 I'm going to try to dust with a little Neem leaf powder and Laurel leaf (bay leaf) powder combo. Maybe that will repell them.

Well, don't have much trouble with hoppers anymore here at my place in Stockton California. Used to be, folks blasted the heck out of them with ..ddt. yeah, it's a wonder we lived thru it. Come the 70s i was more pestered with earwigs and cabbage loppers. Put papers down for wigs overnight, them next am cranked up bbq and creamated wigsin the paper folds. Hoppers, if you can catch them by hand, disable and feed to chicks. Safers spray might work too. Of course there's always, grab a few hoppers, garlic cloves marigold..flowers and leaves peppermint, hot peppers, cooking oil..one eighth cup, ..grind in a blender with enough H2O to make a nice milkshake of bug juice. Mellow for a few days . Strain and apply to plants. Be sure to get undersides of leaves. Also works on dogs that try digging under fences. Won't last forever, but sure beats pesticides. ..also grandma found that lion poo from to zoo deterred deer in her mountain garden. Worked against gophers too when shoved down their holes..mother earth news magazine gave me the bug juice idea years ago. Good luck. Hope you don't have locust type of infestation.

@@user-sc7gm5iq4d I just put the neem leaf powder on. It seems to be working today. I dont have any of the other problems you mentioned. I have those problems solved with very old school methods handed down in the family for generations. But, thanks for the info. 😁👍

Biological controls: Neem/Garlic/Soap spray & diatomaceous earth. Create microclimates for increased biodiversity. Birds, beetles and certain flies are all predators of grasshoppers. Feed your soil biology. Healthy plants are less likely to be attacked and will withstand pest pressures. Good luck, I had every pest you can think of in my tiny garden. Best solution by far is trust in God. :)

Mosquito minnows are often handed out by the county...if you're going to let standing water sit out, they're the best fish to include in large containers. They are live bearers. Also plant lantana so that it helps sterilize the make mosquito. If you are going to do your part to encourage amphibians, you need to be as diligent in reducing mosquitoes.

I use water from boiled egg shells. Make sure the membranes are still attached. Then take out the egg shells and dry and crush them. Then add them to your garden. Enjoy. You can also use banana water and then add the banana peels, don't forget to cut them up. Use all you vegetable juices.

Well, thanks for asking! When I gardened with raised beds I used full sheets of newspaper as mulch, it was great! My newspaper was printed with soy based ink and I never used the shiny adds. I used flattened cardboard boxes between the beds. I used mixed mulch under the fruit trees. And I put slanted plywood under the rabbit hutch, causing all of the goodies to roll into the small trench in front for easy scooping. (Rabbits really like Swiss chard.)

Both my grandmothers were into farming. We always ended up with the ..unsalable.. stuff. Tasted just like the perfectly grown produce. Though, my maternal gram raised chickens, and i still dislike chicken and eggs. Gotta bury it in sauces. Am 73 now and miss the freshness of just picked vegies. Plan on a winter garden, here in california, winters are easy and can aford the water better. Looking forward to beets, carrots and such. Plants wont be heat stressed then.
